Dr. Tapati Gupta,theatre scholar, art critic and translator, was Professor, Department of English, University of Calcutta. She is still associated with the department as a research guide.. Her areas of specialization are Shakespeare, literature and the visual arts, drama, and intercultural theatre. She was awarded grants-in-aid by the Charles Wallace India Trust for post-doctoral research in Britain. Her investigation was related to visual culture in Renaissance England with Special Reference to Elizabethan and Jacobean drama.Her publications include translations and critical articles on literature and visual culture. Her co-edited and edited books include Tagore and Modernity (Kolkata: Das Gupta & Co., 2006), The Other Voice (Anustup, Kolkata) and Bankimchandra’s Bangadarshan: Selected Essays in Translation (Kolkata: Das Gupta & Co., 2007), Contemporary Indian Theatre, (Rawat, Jaipur ) with critical introduction. Gupta was member of the international group researching on ‘Ibsen Between Cultures,’ under the auspices of the Ibsen Centre, University of Oslo, where she has been a guest professor. She is a member of the Asian Theatre Working Group of the International Federation of Theatre Research. Her publications include an article, “From Proscenium to Paddy Fields: Utpal Dutt’s Shakespeare Jatra.” In Re-playing Shakespeare in Asia ed. She is currently preparing a book on contemporary Bengali drama.
